Auricular Therapy Assessment & Treatment
Duration: 60 Min.
What is AURICULAR THERAPY?
According to Wikipedia, “Auriculotherapy (also auricular therapy, ear acupuncture, and auriculoacupuncture) is a form of alternative medicine based on the idea that the ear is a micro system, which reflects the entire body, represented on the auricle, the outer portion of the ear. Conditions affecting the physical, mental or emotional health of the patient are assumed to be treatable by stimulation of the surface of the ear exclusively.”
Is Auricular Therapy some “New Age” fad?
Although there has been a resurgence of interest in Auricular Therapy, it is actually an Ancient Traditional Therapy.
According to Prof. Yifang Tian, CMD, MSc, in her book on the subject, “Xuanyuan Auricular Acupuncture and Clinical Applications”, “Auricular acupuncture therapy originated in Ancient China. Applications of auricular diagnostic and therapeutic methods were first documented in the Nei Jing, the classic book of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Written around 200 BC, it states that the nature and location of various diseases can be determined by inspecting the shape, colour, and capillaries of the ear. It recommends the use of blood-letting puncture of the capillaries of the ear to treat headaches and pain in the hypochondriac region.
The use of the auricular point called “er zhong” to treat infectious diseases, jaundice and thyroid enlargement was first recorded in Qian jin Yao Fang by Sun Simiao in the Tang dynasty (608–907 AD).2
Later, various methods beside acupuncture and moxibustion, such as auricular massage and auricular medicinal coating, came into use and were recorded in documents from different dynasties.”
What are "Ear Seeds"?
Did you know that the actual "ear seeds" used originally and even today in Auricular Therapy are the seeds from a plant? It is believed that this is why the term "ear seeds" was originally coined and is still used to describe them.
The plant, Vaccaria hispanica, has mainly been identified and found in China and parts of Central and Southern Europe, however, most recently, it's European species has been imported into the United States where it has been growing wildly in North Carolina and Georgia.
Also known as Cowherb, Cow Basil, Cowcockle and Cow Soapwort, in English and also known as, Wang Bu Liu Xing in Chinese Medicine.
It has been believed to have become a part of the diet of dairy cows in their fodder, growing freely in pastures, as well as in open fields and at trash sites.
The seeds, a treasured part of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and around the Ancient world for thousands of years, are an average of 1 mm in width, however, their tiny size is power-packed with a mighty long historical use for medicinal preparations, both externally and internally, most notably for generally clearing, promoting balance and healing.
When Ingested, prepared in various formulas or used alone, they have been noted to assist with promoting diuresis (diuretic properties), for promoting lactation in nursing mothers, relieving inflammation and for increasing blood circulation while removing stagnant blood throughout the whole body.
Applied directly, as in Auricular Therapy, these Vaccaria seeds have been utilized to clear meridians, invisible energy channels found thoughout the body, known in TCM as qi or chi.
The seeds, placed on these various points that correspond to systems, organs and parts of the body, eventually may bring about healing or a benefit to the health of the wearer immediately or gradually with time.
What are some of the Benefits of Auricular Therapy?

Human studies have shown that the application of the Ear Seeds to various acupuncture points in the body, have stimulated the release of endorphins. Endorphins are natural chemicals that are produced in the brain which are known to create pain relief in the body.
